This theory is supported by scholars such as C. Dwarakanath Gupta, and Jaisetty Ramanaiah; B. S. L. Hanumantha Rao also mentions this as the most reasonable of the theories, noting that it is a "derivation of the word from gomata, the great Jaina saint, which implies that they were followers of Gomata cult or were originally Jains". Gupta theorises the Komatis were originally traders from Gauda in Bengal, who adopted Jainism and followed the cult of Gomata. They later gave up Jainism and embraced Vedic Hinduism. Hanumantha Rao noted that the merchant classes preferred Jainism for gaining social status and respectability, and the erstwhile Banias became Gomati or followers of the Gomata cult in medieval times.</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>An alternative etymology mentioned by Gupta derives the name of the caste from the name of a river. He states that the Komatis are said to have originally lived on the banks of Gomati, a local name for the Godavari river. Yet another theory states that the name of the community is derived from the Telugu phrase konu-ammu-atti ("persons engaged in the exchange of goods"). Colonial ethnographers Edgar Thurston and R. V. Russell derived "Komati" from the Sanskrit term "Gomathi," believed to have the meaning of possessor or keeper of cows or Ko-mati ("to be fox minded"), which references their business acumen. An origin story accepted by many in the community is mentioned in the Kanyaka Purana which states that Shiva gave them the name Go-mati ("cow-minded").</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>The term "Vaisya" has been used to refer to Komatis. Their trade associations bore the name nagaram. They also participated in long-distance trade networks called pekkandru (literally "the many"). During the times of the Vijayanagara Empire, they moved to various parts of South India to further their businesses. During the empire's reign, they emerged as prominent merchants in South Indian trade, and sought to be considered as Vaishyas, the third highest varna in the Hindu caste system. Among the "Committys" that the British dealt with were the bulk sellers of cloth and other export commodities, money lenders and money changers, and the individual shop-keepers. The second Chief Merchant of the British East India Company in Madras was a Komati called Kasi Viranna, appointed in 1669. There was fierce competition in George Town between the Tamil-speaking Beeri merchants, who formed the 'left-hand' caste division and the Komati and Balija merchants, who were referred to as the 'right-hand' caste division and who also led the right-hand castes. Other "right hand" castes included those of washermen, barbers, potters, tank-diggers, Yenadis (tribals), and outcastes. The competition between the divisions gave rise to riots and disputes in 1652 and 1707. The British were able to settle the disputes between left-hand and right-hand caste divisions amicably by resettling members to designated areas in George Town which is a small neighbourhood in the city of Chennai.</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>Niyogi Brahmins and the Maha-nad opposed the attempts of Komatis to designate themselves as Vaishyas. The Maha-nad was a multi-caste secret assembly that was created to exact retribution for breaking the rules and rights of castes. The Maha-nad was led by Niyogi Brahmins, Chettiars, and Telagas. Whenever the Komatis attempted to perform orthodox rites (especially the Upanayana ceremony), the Maha-nad would disrupt the ceremonies. The leaders of the Maha-nad would invade the house of Komatis and disrupt the sacrificial fire, rendering the ceremony useless. The Maha-nad would hire throngs of untouchables to attack the houses of Komatis and vandalise them with cattle bones, blood, human feces, and cattle feces mixed with water. The Vaidiki Brahmins who served as family priests for the Komatis were, unlike their Niyogi Brahmin counterparts, unconcerned with the idea that Komatis were infringing the boundaries between lower once-born and upper twice born castes. From 1784-1825, the majority of Komatis conducted the Upanayana ceremonies according to the Kanyaki Purana, a late medieval Telugu text sacred to the Komatis. These Upanayana ceremonies were completely in Telugu and conducted right before a Komati man's marriage, however a few wealthier Komati families were able to afford the orthodox Sanskrit Upanayana for younger bachelor men. The orthodox Sanskrit version allowed Komatis to perform further orthodox rites, and Vaidiki Brahmins were fine in officiating them. By 1825, the two versions had mixed into a part-Telugu, part-Sanskrit ceremony. The Vaidikis argued that there was nothing in the Vedas that prohibited the Komatis from performing their own Telugu versions of the Upanayana. They stated that since it was a well known fact that Komatis called themselves Vaishyas and their men wore the sacred thread, there was no reason prohibiting them from moving on to the orthodox Sanskrit versions of the Upanayana ceremony. The Niyogis argued that while they did indeed call themselves Vaishyas, they could not be real Vaishyas due to Hindu chronology. According to Hindu chronology, Vaishyas had become extinct in Kali Yuga, the final time period in Hindu cosmology. Additionally, the Niyogis stated that the Komatis performed the Upanayana incorrectly due to the fact that the majority of them had it performed right before an man's marriage, rather than at age 24 which the orthodox texts state a Vaishya bachelor should have the ceremony conducted. They argued that since the Komatis could not be real Vaishyas and performed the Upanayana incorrectly, they had renounced their right to do so and that there was nothing they could do to atone for it. कि चूंकि यह एक सर्वविदित तथ्य है कि कोमाटिस खुद को वैश्य कहते हैं और उनके लोग पवित्र धागा पहनते हैं, इसलिए उन्हें उपनयन समारोह के रूढ़िवादी संस्कृत संस्करणों पर जाने से रोकने का कोई कारण नहीं था। हिंदू ब्रह्मांड विज्ञान का अंतिम समय था। इसके अतिरिक्त, नियोगियों ने कहा कि कोमाटिस ने उपनयन संस्कार गलत तरीके से किया क्योंकि उनमें से अधिकांश ने इसे 24 साल की उम्र के बजाय किसी व्यक्ति के विवाह से ठीक पहले किया था, जिसके अनुसार रूढ़िवादी ग्रंथों में कहा गया है कि एक वैश्य कुंवारे व्यक्ति को यह समारोह आयोजित करना चाहिए। उन्होंने तर्क दिया कि चूंकि कोमाटिस वास्तविक वैश्य नहीं हो सकते थे और उपनयन गलत तरीके से करते थे, इसलिए उन्होंने ऐसा करने का अपना अधिकार त्याग दिया था और इसके प्रायश्चित के लिए वे कुछ नहीं कर सकते थे। दशकों तक कानूनी लड़ाइयाँ चलती रहीं, ब्रिटिश अधिकारी कोमाटिस और नियोगी के पृ०”</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">यह वर्णन गुप्तवंश के एक राजा के सम्बन्ध में किया गया है । इससे तीन बातें स्पष्ट हैं—-गुप्तवंश के राजा वैश्य जाति के थे । उनका उद्भव मथुरा में हुवा था और उनका वैशाली के साथ सम्बन्ध था। मथुरा उस प्रदेश में है, जहां से वैश्य श्राग्रेयगण दूर नहीं है ।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">स्वयं मथुरा का घनिष्ठ सम्बन्ध राजा अग्रसेन के भाई वैश्य शूरसेन के साथ जोड़ा गया है। उरुचरितम् के अनुसार तो शौरसेन देश जो मथुरा कहाने लगा, उसका कारण यह वैश्य शूरसेन ही था। वैशाली के प्राचीन राजवंश वैशालक वंश का उद्भव वैश्य भलन्दन तथा वात्सप्री से हुबा था, राजा विशाल की कन्याओं से राजा धनपाल के पुत्रों का विवाह हुवा था। इस प्रकार वैशाली के वंश का वैश्यों के साथ गहरा सम्बन्ध है, और गुप्तों का वैश्य होना सर्वथा संगत है। गुप्तवंशी सम्राट वैश्य थे, यह जहां मंजुश्रीमूलकल्प से सूचित होता है, वहां इन राजाओं का अपने नामों के साथ 'गुप्त' लगाना भी इसी बात का द्योतक है। 'गुप्त' लगाने की परम्परा वैश्यों में ही है, और धर्मग्रन्थों ने भी इसका विधान किया है. गुप्त सम्राटों का गोत्र धारण था । एक शिलालेख में गुप्त राजकुमारी प्रभाकरगुप्ता को धारण गोत्रीया' लिखा गया है । उसके पति का गोत्र 'विष्णुवृद्ध' था । प्रभाकर गुप्ता का अपना गोत्र धारण था</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">सम्भवतः धारण गोत्री गुप्तों के प्रतिनिधि हैं। गुप्त सम्राटों की जाति को निश्चित करने का एक अच्छा साधन कुमारी प्रभाकर गुप्ता का धारण गोत्र है । यह धारण गोत्र ढैरण (धरण) की शकल में वैश्य अग्रवालों में पाया जाता है ।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">धारण-गोत्रीया प्रभाकर गुप्ता का विवाह जिस कुमार से हुवा था, उसके वंश को भी वैश्य कहा गया है, उसका वैश्य धारण गोत्र की कुमारी से विवाह होना अधिक संगत है, छोटी जाति की कुमारी से नहीं। ___ गुप्त सम्राटों ने अपनी जाति को छिपाया है, यह कहना शायद उचित नहीं है । सम्भवतः, अपने वंश के सम्बन्ध में सब से अधिक स्पष्ट रूप से उन्होंने ही सूचना दी है । धर्म ग्रन्थों के आदेश 'गुप्तेति वैश्यस्य' का अनुसरण करते हुवे उन्होंने 'गुप्त' शब्द का अपने नामों के साथ प्रयोग किया है। धर्मस्मृतियों के निर्माण का समय भी ऐतिहासिक लोग प्रायः गुप्त काल को मानते हैं</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">इसके अलावा नीचे वर्णित राजवंश भी वैश्य वंश से ही सम्बन्धित हैं. जिनकी विस्तृत जानकारी अलग अलग पोस्ट में दी गयी हैं.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">बंगाल So that they can turn Dharmaranya in a centre of veda sanshkriti. The lords asked to Vishwakarma to build houses forts and temples reside for the Brahmins. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh created six thousand Brahmins each. They also gave them gotras and gotrasdevi. According to historians the people created by vishnu were sober and honest nature, the people created by Brahma were of rajas nature and people created by Shiva were of angry nature.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div> <span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Brahmin could consented on their work, Brahma created Kamdhenu caw and on order of Brahma Kamdhenu created 36000 people by digging earth by her nails. Those were known as Gobhuja or Gobhva. They settled in nearest Modhera so that village known by Gabhu. Adhalja, Mandaliya, Madhukara, Modh Modi, Teli Modi, Champaneri Modi, Prema Modi all were parts of Modh Vaniks and Modh famers were known Modh Patel.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Modh are the followers of Modheshwari Maa (also known as Matangi Maa), a form of Amba Maa with eighteen hands. They lived in a town called Modhera in Patan District in the northern part of Gujarat. The name of the town Modhera was adopted by the community living around the temple of Modheshwari Mata. The residents of Modhera were from the four caste systems, the Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and the Shudras (services providers). Later on, after 10th century onwards, the predominant community of Modhera consisted of the Brahmins and the Banias. The residents of Modhera migrated to other parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra states to towns such as Surat, Bulsar, Navsari, Mandvi, Bharuch, Ankaleshwar, Bardoli, Billimora, Chikhli, Gandevi, Dharampur, Bombay, Varanasi etc. Hence, the descendants who originated from the township of Modhera whether they are Brahmins, Vanias, Kshatriyas or Harijans are all referred to as Modhs.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">It is believed that the Modhs are further divided into Dasha and Visha like any other Gujarati nyat (community). The residents of satellite townships of Modhera like Mandal,adalaj,Gobha also prefixes their town name like Mandaliya Modh, Adalja Modh, Gobhva Modh. The residents who lived on right (dakshin bhag) of townships are called Dasha and those living on left flank (vaam bhag)are called visha. While Dasa Modhs are essentially in business. a subsect of Visha Modhs are called as “GOWBHUJA”. Reference is made in Ramayan that during fight between Viswamitra and Vashisht muni – On Order of Vashisth muni Sabala cow created an army from her arms to defend herself & ashram of Vashist muni and the descendents of these soldiers are also referred to as ‘Gowbhuja’. Visha Modhs are in Land & Jewellary Business.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">In the past century, many folks from the Modh community have migrated to countries such as East Africa, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Fiji and the gulf countries.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Modheswari Ma’s Pragatya</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The devil by the name of Karnat was erecting havoc in the area of Dharmaranya. The people of the area were fode-up because of Karnat terrorism, particularly. The Brahmin as he used to harass them in their praying. All the Brahmins got together and went to goddess Shri Mata for help and protection from the devil. After listening to problems of Brahmin the goddess got very very angry. She started throwing out fire from her mouth due to her anger from the fire a powerful goddess by name of Matangi (Modheswari) was created by Shree Mata. Matangi had eighteen arms each having a weapon like trident, Kamandal, Shell, club, Pash, dagger etc. Goddess Matangi killed devil Karnat (In another version Shyamala sister of Matangi killed Karnat) It was mahadev trij the day Karnat was killed. Brahmins of Modhera celebrated that day with a feast and accepted modheswari as their Kuldevi. Every year on the thirteen day of Maha Month Modh Brahmins celebrate as Kuldevi’s day.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Modhera’s History</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Modhera’s old name was Moherkpur. In Tretayug it was known as Satyamandir , in Dwaparyug it was known as Vedbhuvan , in Kaliyug it was Moherkpur and Dharmaranya , & in Madhyayug it was known as Modhera…</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">As said earlier Modhera was known by various names in different time such as Moherakpur, Dharmaranya, Satya Mandir, Ved Bhuvan. The local people of Modhera are known as Modhera. This is the motherland of Modh Brahmin and Modh Baniyas. It was here only goddess Matangi emerged. Yudhisthir and Lord Ram also visited this town. The famous sun temple also built here. It is at this place Brahmas daughter and wife of Sun Sangnya and king Manu their prayer under the tree of Bakul. Lord shiva also resided here by name of Dharmeswar. It is believed that all th gods used to stay here. Court dancer of Indra, Lokpals and dikpals also stayed here to do the social work. All gods established this place as a pilgrimage. Here there are places known as Shivkup, Dharmavanpi, Bhutnath Mahadev, Mukteswar Mahadev, Dhara tirth, Nag tirth, Indreswar Mahadev, Ganga kup and Suvarna river is coincident very pious.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">At this place Yamraj (Dharamraj) started his prayers for one thousand years. Indraraj got scared for his thrown Indrasan and asked one of his apsara to disturb Yamraj in his prayers. She did not succeed. Dharmaraj told Indra that he does not want his Indrasan. But would like to see Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased with Yamraj and blessed him with a boon. Yamraj ask to Join his name with the place was he began hi his prayers and also asked Lord Shiva to resided there permanently. Lord Shiva named the place as Darmaranya at he himself stayed there as swayambhu by the name of Dharmeshwar.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh created Brahmins who were master in Vedas. So that they can turn Dharmaranya in a centre of veda sanshkriti. The lords asked to Vishwakarma to build houses forts and temples reside for the Brahmins. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh created six thousand Brahmins each. They also gave them gotras and gotrasdevi. They settled in nearest Modhera so that village known by Gabhu. Brahma gave the responsibility of protection of Dharmaranya to his daughter Shreemata.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The devil by the name of Karnat was erecting havoc in the area of Dharmaranya. The people of the area were fade-up because of Karnat terrorism, particularly. The Brahmin as he used to harass them in their praying. All the Brahmins got together and went to goddess shri Mata for help and protection from the devil. After listening to problems of Brahmin the goddess got very very angry. Every year on the thirteen day of Maha Month Modh Brahmins celebrate as Kuldevi’s day.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">In the third yuga the reinsertion of Vishnu Lord Ram his wife sita and his brothers came here to offer. Their repentance as Ram had killed devil the raven who was also a Brahmin. When they entered Dharmaranya the speed of their chariots and music went dawn. Even their elephants and horses speed lessened. Ram was surprised to see all these and asked his guru Vashistha the reason. Vashistha said that they have to walk down to this pilgrimage instead of riding a vehicle or animal. Ram agreed to this and all of them started walking. After offering his Prayers to Matangi Ram stayed at the bank of river Suvarna and prayed Rameswar and Kameswar. Ram saw the people of Dharmaranya have migrated to other places and the Brahmins also had left the town.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">One day Ram heard a sound of woman’s crying. He sent his people to find out who she is. The lady refused to say anything except for Ram. So Ram went to her, consoled her and asked her problem. She said though you have come here, this town will remain as it is without people. The well were people used to have a holy deep, today pigs are swims are messing up the place. So please reestablish this town and oblige me. Ram agreed to do so and called back all the Brahmins who had left the town. He got houses and temples reconstructed. Ram wanted to donate something more, but the Brahmins said that they cannot accept any donation without permission of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Ram worshiped Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh they allowed Brahmins to accept the donation. Ram gave fifty five villages. (According to other legend four hundred) as a donation.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Hanuman also went around and asked Baniyas to resettle in Dharmaranya. Ram constructed many temples there and a beautiful fort surrounding the city. About 1, 25, 000 Baniya settled in the town with blessing of Ram. Ram also asked hanuman to protect the town. So that nobody can disturb by prayers of Brahmins. When Ram revisited the place he performed a Havan there. He created Sitapur and gifted it to Brahmins.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The happiness of Dharmaranya was not long lived. The people of Modhera were in trouble again. King of Kanyakubj Kanoj Aamraj started bothering them. The king had given up his religion and accepted Buddhism. Because of his order even people were forced to change their religion. Aamraj got his daughter Ratnaganga Married to the King of Vallbhi and gave away Dharmaranya as a wedding gift to her. She used to believe in Jain religion. She took away all the rights of Brahmin, though Brahmins tried to prove that the land was gifted by Ram, but nobody was prepared to listen to them. The Brahmins went to king, he insulted them and said if Hanuman is suppose to protect you and your land go out get him here to protect you.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The Brahmins came back to Dharmaranya and decide to go to Rameswar were Hanuman is residing and seek for his help. Few were in two minds they argued that after going there is Hanuman doesn’t meet us then what to do. About fifteen thousand Brahmins were in favor of such smart argument so they were by caste as Chaturvedi. At last they also agreed to go there. Though their twenty and Trivedh’s eleven representatives total thirty one started for Rameswar to meet Hanuman.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">They had to suffer a lot during their journey. They had to face cold wave, heat and rain. The arrangement for food and water was inadequate, oven the rest house were not proper, many a days they had to go without food. Because of this twenty representatives were fed up and started walking back. But the Remain representatives with a strong will reached to Rameswar and prayed Hanuman. Hanuman was pleased and met them as a Brahmin. He heard the story of Brahmins and as boon he gave them hair of armpit in two packets and said that when Aamraj will touch this racket everything around him will catch fire, at that time Brahmins should stay away. Aamraj will come to you people asking for forgiveness and when he promises to give dharmaranya back to you, you will give him this second packet, if you sprinkle these hair all around the fire will go off.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Brahmins went to kanyakubj and gave the first packet to the king. Seeing hair in it the king got angry and threw the packet away. Then all there the palace caught fire. King got scared and went to Brahmins for forgiveness and promised to give them back the town. Brahmins gave him the second packet containing the hair of right armpit by which the fire was distinguished. The king made new documents of town and handed over to Brahmins.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The last Rajput king of Gujarat Karndev Vaghela was defeated by the general Afzalkhan of sultan Alaudin Khilji in savant 1356. The Muslims started ruling Gujarat. They started destroying temples and merchant towards Modhera to enquire it. The Modh Brahmins were not only educated but they were brave worriers also. Brahmins used to lead in the army. Brahmins and Baniyas were brave. All the Modhs got together and fought with Muslims bravely for about six months. The Muslims who had defeated Gujarat were about to face a defeat by Modhs. They agreed to sign a treaty. The Treats said that if people of Modhera give them 5000 gold coins the Muslims will retreat.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">On the day of Holi the treaty was signed. The doors of Modhera were opened. Muslims did not abide by the treaty and attacked the town and looted the temple of Modhera and also destroyed the sun temple. The Brahmins immersed the idol of goddess in Dharma Vav so that Muslims can not damage it and people of Modhera migrated to different Places.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">After centuries Gayakwad started ruling Baroda. They protected temples from further destructions. But Brahmins and Baniyas of Modhera had already migrated to other places and due to that Modhera did not prosper again.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Sayaji Rao was crowned as king. He made railway traveling easier by laying the railway lines. This emoted Modhs to go to Modhera and offer their prayer at Dharma Vav (The well) in which they believed that the idol was immersed. The temple was destroyed. So all Modhs thought of reconstruction of temple.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">In Last half century:</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The lead was taken by advocate Shri Nathubhai Girdharlal basically hailed from Viramgam, but settled in Patan. आतंकवाद से इलाके के लोग तंग आ चुके थे। शैतान उन्हें प्रार्थना करते समय परेशान करता था। सभी लोग एकत्रित होकर शैतान से सुरक्षा के लिए देवी श्माता के पास गए। लोगो की समस्या सुनकर देवी बहुत क्रोधित हो गईं। उन्होंने अपने क्रोध के कारण अपने मुँह से अन्दर से आग को बाहर फेंकना शुरू कर दिया, आग से मातंगी (मोधेश्वरी) नाम की एक शक्तिशाली देवी की रचना श्री माता ने की। मातंगी की अठारह भुजाएँ थीं जिनमें से प्रत्येक में त्रिशूल, कमंडल, शंख, गदा, पाश, खंजर आदि हथियार थे। देवी मातंगी ने शैतान कर्नाट को मार डाला था (दूसरे संस्करण में मातंगी की बहन श्यामला ने कर्नाट को मार डाला था) जिस दिन कर्नाट की हत्या हुई थी वह महादेव त्रिज था। मोढेरा के वैश्यों ने उस दिन दावत मनाई और मोढेश्वरी को अपनी कुलदेवी के रूप में स्वीकार किया। हर साल महा माह के तेरहवें दिन को मोढ़ वैश्य कुलदेवी के दिन के रूप में मनाते हैं। style="text-align: justify;"> तीसरे युग में विष्णु भगवान राम, उनकी पत्नी सीता और उनके भाई यहां तर्पण करने आये थे। उनका पश्चाताप इस प्रकार था कि राम ने शैतान कौवे को मार डाला था जो एक ब्राह्मण भी था। जब उन्होंने धर्मारण्य में प्रवेश किया तो उनके रथों की गति और संगीत की गति तेज हो गई। उनके हाथियों और घोड़ों की गति भी कम हो गई। यह सब देखकर राम को आश्चर्य हुआ और उन्होंने अपने गुरु वशिष्ठ से इसका कारण पूछा। वशिष्ठ ने कहा कि उन्हें किसी वाहन या जानवर पर सवार होने के बजाय पैदल ही इस तीर्थ तक जाना होगा। राम इस बात पर सहमत हो गए और वे सभी चलने लगे। मातंगी की पूजा करने के बाद राम सुवर्णा नदी के तट पर रुके और उन्होंने रामेश्वर और कामेश्वर की प्रार्थना की। राम ने देखा कि धर्मारण्य के लोग अन्यत्र चले गये हैं और ब्राह्मण भी नगर छोड़कर चले गये हैं।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">एक दिन राम को किसी स्त्री के रोने की आवाज सुनाई दी। उसने अपने लोगों को यह पता लगाने के लिए भेजा कि वह कौन है। महिला ने राम के अलावा कुछ भी कहने से इनकार कर दिया. तो राम उसके पास गए, उसे सांत्वना दी और उसकी समस्या पूछी। उन्होंने कहा कि यद्यपि आप यहां आ गए हैं, लेकिन यह शहर लोगों के बिना वैसा ही रहेगा। जिस कुएँ में लोग पवित्र स्थान रखते थे, आज उस स्थान पर सूअर गंदगी कर रहे हैं। अत: कृपया इस नगर को पुनः बसायें और मुझे उपकृत करें। राम ऐसा करने के लिए सहमत हो गए और उन सभी ब्राह्मणों को वापस बुला लिया जो शहर छोड़कर चले गए थे। उसने मकानों और मंदिरों का पुनर्निर्माण करवाया। राम कुछ और दान देना चाहते थे, लेकिन ब्राह्मणों ने कहा कि वे ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश की अनुमति के बिना कोई दान स्वीकार नहीं कर सकते। राम ने ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश की पूजा की, उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों को दान स्वीकार करने की अनुमति दी। राम ने पचपन गाँव दिये। (अन्य कथा के अनुसार चार सौ) दान स्वरुप। हनुमान ने भी चारों ओर घूमकर बनियों को धर्मारण्य में बसने के लिए कहा। राम ने वहां कई मंदिर और शहर के चारों ओर एक सुंदर किला बनवाया। राम के आशीर्वाद से लगभग 1,25,000 वैश्य बनिये शहर में बस गये। राम ने हनुमान से शहर की रक्षा करने के लिए भी कहा। ताकि ब्राह्मणों की पूजा-अर्चना से कोई परेशान न हो सके। जब राम उस स्थान पर दोबारा आये तो उन्होंने वहां हवन किया। उन्होंने सीतापुर की स्थापना की और इसे ब्राह्मणों और वैश्यों को उपहार में दे दिया।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">धर्मारण्य का सुख अधिक समय तक नहीं रहा। मोढेरा के लोग फिर मुसीबत में थे. कान्यकुब्ज के राजा कनोज आमराज ने उन्हें परेशान करना शुरू कर दिया। राजा ने अपना धर्म त्यागकर बौद्ध धर्म स्वीकार कर लिया था। उनके आदेश के कारण लोग अपना धर्म बदलने पर भी मजबूर हो गये। आमराज ने अपनी पुत्री रत्नागंगा का विवाह वल्लभी राजा के साथ कर दिया और उसे विवाह उपहार के रूप में धर्मारन्या दे दिया। वह जैन धर्म में आस्था रखती थीं. उसने ब्राह्मणों के सारे अधिकार छीन लिए, हालाँकि ब्राह्मणों ने यह साबित करने की कोशिश की कि ज़मीन राम ने उपहार में दी थी, लेकिन कोई भी उनकी बात सुनने को तैयार नहीं था। ब्राह्मण राजा के पास गए, उन्होंने उनका अपमान किया और कहा कि यदि हनुमान आपकी और आपकी भूमि की रक्षा कर सकते हैं तो उन्हें आपकी रक्षा के लिए यहां बुलाएं। ब्राह्मण धर्मारण्य वापस आए और हनुमान के निवास स्थान पर रामेश्वर जाने और उनकी मदद मांगने का फैसला किया। कुछ लोग असमंजस में थे, उन्होंने तर्क दिया कि वहां जाने के बाद हनुमान हमें नहीं मिलेंगे तो क्या करें। लगभग पन्द्रह हजार ब्राह्मण ऐसे चतुर तर्क के पक्ष में थे इसलिए वे जाति से चतुर्वेदी थे। आख़िरकार वे भी वहाँ जाने को तैयार हो गये। हालाँकि उनके बीस और त्रिवेध के ग्यारह प्रतिनिधि कुल इकतीस होकर हनुमान से मिलने के लिए रामेश्वर के लिए रवाना हुए।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">अपनी यात्रा के दौरान उन्हें बहुत कष्ट सहना पड़ा। उन्हें शीत लहर, गर्मी और वर्षा का सामना करना पड़ा। भोजन और पानी की व्यवस्था अपर्याप्त थी, विश्राम गृह के ओवन ठीक नहीं थे, कई दिन तो उन्हें बिना भोजन के ही रहना पड़ता था। इससे बीस प्रतिनिधि तंग आकर वापस चलने लगे। लेकिन शेष प्रतिनिधि दृढ़ इच्छाशक्ति के साथ रामेश्वर पहुंचे और हनुमान से प्रार्थना की। हनुमान प्रसन्न हुए और एक ब्राह्मण के रूप में उनसे मिले। उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों की कहानी सुनी और वरदान के रूप में उन्हें दो पैकेटों में बगल के बाल दिए और कहा कि जब आमराज इस रैकेट को छूएंगे तो उनके आस-पास की हर चीज में आग लग जाएगी, उस समय ब्राह्मणों को दूर रहना चाहिए। आमराज तुम लोगों के पास क्षमा मांगने आयेंगे और जब वे तुम लोगों को धर्मारण्य वापस देने का वचन देंगे तो तुम उन्हें यह दूसरी पोटली दे देना, इन बालों को तुम चारों ओर छिड़क दोगे तो आग बुझ जायेगी। ब्राह्मण कान्यकुब्ज गए और पहला पैकेट राजा को दिया। उसमें बाल देखकर राजा क्रोधित हो गए और पैकेट फेंक दिया। तभी पूरे महल में आग लग गई। राजा डर गया और ब्राह्मणों के पास क्षमा मांगने गया और उन्हें नगर वापस देने का वचन दिया। ब्राह्मणों ने उन्हें दूसरी पोटली दी जिसमें दाहिनी कांख के बाल थे जिससे अग्नि पहचानी जा सकती थी। राजा ने नगर के नये दस्तावेज़ बनवाये और ब्राह्मणों को सौंप दिये। गुजरात के अंतिम राजपूत राजा कर्णदेव वाघेला को 1356 में सुल्तान अलाउद्दीन खिलजी के सेनापति अफजलखान ने हराया था। मुसलमानों ने गुजरात पर शासन करना शुरू कर दिया। उन्होंने इसका पता लगाने के लिए मोढेरा की ओर मंदिरों और व्यापारियों को नष्ट करना शुरू कर दिया। मोध ब्राह्मण और वैश्य न केवल शिक्षित थे बल्कि वे साहसी योद्धा भी थे। सेना में नेतृत्व ब्राह्मण और वैश्य करते थे। ब्राह्मण और बनिये वीर थे। सभी मोधों ने एकत्रित होकर मुसलमानों से लगभग छः माह तक वीरतापूर्वक युद्ध किया। जिन मुसलमानों ने गुजरात को हराया था, उन्हें मोधों से हार का सामना करना पड़ा। वे एक संधि पर हस्ताक्षर करने के लिए सहमत हुए। ट्रीट्स ने कहा कि अगर मोढेरा के लोग उन्हें 5000 सोने के सिक्के देंगे तो मुसलमान पीछे हट जायेंगे।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">होली के दिन संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किये गये। मोढेरा के दरवाजे खुले. मुसलमानों ने संधि का पालन नहीं किया और शहर पर हमला किया और मोढेरा के मंदिर को लूट लिया और सूर्य मंदिर को भी नष्ट कर दिया। ब्राह्मणों ने देवी की मूर्ति को धर्म वाव में विसर्जित कर दिया ताकि मुसलमान इसे नुकसान न पहुँचा सकें और मोढेरा के लोग अलग-अलग स्थानों पर चले गए। सदियों के बाद गायकवाड ने बड़ौदा पर शासन करना शुरू कर दिया। उन्होंने मंदिरों को और अधिक विनाश से बचाया। लेकिन मोढेरा के ब्राह्मण और बनिये पहले ही अन्य स्थानों पर चले गए थे और इस कारण मोढेरा फिर से समृद्ध नहीं हो सका। सयाजी राव को राजा के रूप में ताज पहनाया गया। उन्होंने रेल लाइनें बिछाकर रेल यात्रा को आसान बनाया। इससे मोढों को मोढेरा जाने और धर्म वाव (कुआं) में प्रार्थना करने के लिए प्रेरित किया गया, जहां उनका मानना था कि मूर्ति का विसर्जन किया गया था। मंदिर नष्ट कर दिया गया. इसलिए सभी मोढ़ों वैश्यों ने मंदिर के पुनर्निर्माण के बारे में सोचा।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">पिछली आधी सदी में: इसका नेतृत्व अधिवक्ता श्री नाथूभाई गिरधरलाल ने किया, जो मूल रूप से विरमगाम के थे, लेकिन पाटन में बस गए। उन्होंने अपना पेशा छोड़ दिया और प्रतिज्ञा की कि जब तक मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण नहीं हो जाता तब तक वे जूते नहीं पहनेंगे और पगड़ी नहीं बांधेंगे। ऐसे नेक कार्य के लिए एक समिति नियुक्त की गई। वे आसपास के सभी गाँवों में गये और बड़े परिश्रम से धन एकत्र किया। आख़िरकार 1962 में पुनर्निर्माण कार्य शुरू हुआ और महा 1966 के तेरहवें दिन यह पूरा हुआ। मूर्ति को मंदिर में रखा गया। मोधेरस्वरी मंदिर के दर्शन करने आने वाले लोगों के लिए एक धर्मशाला किला बनाया गया था। अब वहाँ रहने के लिए सुसज्जित कमरे हैं, स्नानघर और शौचालय की सुविधा है, भोजन के लिए एक लॉज और धार्मिक अनुष्ठान करने के लिए एक हॉल है। यहां पानी जमा करने की भी पर्याप्त सुविधा है और एक गौशाला भी बनी हुई है। मोढेरा में कुछ दिलचस्प ऐतिहासिक स्थान (जैसा कि हमारा मूल स्थान है) और सभ्यता की प्रारंभिक शताब्दियों के हिस्से के रूप में और 10 वीं शताब्दी की निर्माण सीमाओं की पहेली।</span></div></span></div>प्रवीण गुप्ता - PRAVEEN Telugu-speaking mercantile community primarily living in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and in smaller numbers in Telangana and Kerala. Balijas are known as Banajigas in Karnataka.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Etymology</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Variations of the name in use in the medieval era were Balanja, Bananja, Bananju, Banajiga and Banijiga, with probable cognates Balijiga, Valanjiyar, Balanji, Bananji and derivatives such as Baliga, all of which are said to be derived from the Sanskrit term Vanik or Vanij, for trader.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Another version for etymology states that Balija is derived from the Sanskrit word Bali, a sacrifice made during 'Yagna' ritual and Ja meaning born. Therefore, Balija means 'born from sacrifice'.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Origins</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Beginning in the 9th century, references are found in inscriptions throughout the Kannada and Tamil areas to a trading network, which is sometimes referred to as a guild, called the Five Hundred Lords of Ayyavolu that provided trade links between trading communities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. From the 13th century, inscriptions referring to "Vira Balanjyas" (warrior merchants) started appearing in the Andhra country. The Vira Balanjyas, whose origins are often claimed to lie in the Ayyavolu, represented long-distance trading networks that employed fighters to protect their warehouses and goods in transit. The traders were identified as nanadesi (of 'many countries') and as swadesi ('own country'). The terms balanjya-setti and balija were also used for these traders, and in later times naidu and chetti. These traders formed collectives called pekkandru and differentiated themselves from other collectives called nagaram, which probably represented Komati merchants. The pekkandru collectives also included members of other communities with status titles reddi, boya and nayaka. They spread all over South India, Sri Lanka, and also some countries in the Southeast Asia.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Velcheru Narayana Rao et al. note that the Balijas were first mobilised politically by the Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya. Later, in the 15th and 16th centuries, they colonised the Tamil country and established Nayaka chieftaincies. At this time, Balijas were leaders of the left-hand section of castes. These Balija warriors were noted as fearless and some stories speak of them assassinating kings who interfered with their affairs. Cynthia Talbot believes that in Andhra the transformation of occupational descriptors into caste-based descriptors did not occur until at least the 17th century.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The classification of people as Balija was one of many challenges for the census enumerators of the British Raj era, whose desire was to reduce a complex social system to one of administrative simplicity using theories of evolutionary anthropology. Early Raj census attempts in Madras Presidency recorded a wide variety of people claiming to be members of Balija subcastes but who appeared to share little in common and thus defied the administrative desire for what it considered to be a rational and convenient taxonomy. Those who claimed to be Chetty had an obvious connection through their engagement in trade and those who called themselves Kavarai were simply using the Tamil word for Balija but, for example, the Linga Balija based their claim to Balija status on a sectarian identification, the Gazula were bangle-makers by occupation, the Telaga had Telugu origins and the Rajamahendram also appeared to be a geographic claim based on their origins in the town of Rajahmundry. Subsequent attempts to rationalise the enumeration merely created other anomalies and caused upset.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Balija branches</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">There are numerous branches, sub-divisions or social groups which make up the larger Balija social group.Balija Chettis (or Chetti Balija): Mentioned in several Vijayanagar accounts as wealthy merchants who controlled powerful trading guilds. To secure their loyalty, the Vijayanagar kings made them Desais or "superintendents of all castes in the country." They were classified as right-hand castes. David Rudner claims that the Balija Chettis became a separate caste from the Balija Nayak warriors as recent as the 19th century; and accordingly they have closer kinship ties to the Nayak warriors than to Chetti merchants.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Gavara is a trading community and is a sub-caste of Balija. Kavarai is the tamil name for Balijas, who have settled in Tamil Nadu. That is the Tamilised rendition of Gavara. Dasa Banajiga are also called as Jaina Kshatriya Ramanuja-Dasa Vaniyas and Sadu Banajiga as they were formerly Jain Kshatriyas who were converted into Vaishnavism by Ramanujacharya during the rein of Bitti Deva. They are mostly found in Channapatna near Bangalore. They are clean in their habits, pure vegetarians, follow the doctrines of Ramanujacharya, worship Vaishnava gods, speak Kannada, and cremate their dead.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Caste titles</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Some Balijas use surnames such as Naidu or Nayudu, and Naicker, which share a common root. Nayaka as a term was first used during the Vishnukundina dynasty that ruled from the Krishna and Godavari deltas during the 3rd century AD. है कि बालिजा संस्कृत शब्द बाली से लिया गया है, जो 'यज्ञ' अनुष्ठान के दौरान किया गया एक बलिदान है और जिसका का अर्थ है जन्म लेना। इसलिए, बलिजा का अर्थ है 'बलिदान से पैदा हुआ'।</div></span><div नेटवर्क का उल्लेख मिलता है, जिसे कभी-कभी एक गिल्ड के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, जिसे फाइव हंड्रेड लॉर्ड्स ऑफ अय्यावोलु कहा जाता है, जो तमिलनाडु और कर्नाटक में व्यापारिक समुदायों के बीच व्यापार संबंध प्रदान करता था। . 13वीं शताब्दी से, आंध्र देश में "वीरा बालंज्य" (योद्धा व्यापारी) से संबंधित शिलालेख दिखाई देने लगे। वीरा बालंज्य, जिनकी उत्पत्ति अक्सर अय्यावोलु में होने का दावा किया जाता है, लंबी दूरी के व्यापारिक नेटवर्क का प्रतिनिधित्व करते थे जो पारगमन में अपने गोदामों और सामानों की सुरक्षा के लिए सेनानियों को नियुक्त करते थे। व्यापारियों की पहचान नानादेसी ('कई देशों' के) और स्वदेशी ('अपने देश') के रूप में की गई थी। इन व्यापारियों और बाद के समय में नायडू और चेट्टी के लिए बालंज्या-सेटी और बालिजा शब्दों का भी उपयोग किया गया था। इन व्यापारियों ने पेक्कंद्रू नामक समूह बनाए और खुद को नगरम नामक अन्य समूहों से अलग किया, जो संभवतः कोमाटी वैश्य व्यापारियों का प्रतिनिधित्व करते थे। पेक्कंद्रू समूहों में रेड्डी, बोया और नायका जैसी प्रतिष्ठा वाले अन्य समुदायों के सदस्य भी शामिल थे। वे पूरे दक्षिण भारत, श्रीलंका और दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया के कुछ देशों में भी फैले हुए हैं। वेलचेरु नारायण राव और अन्य। ध्यान दें कि बलिजा को सबसे पहले विजयनगर सम्राट कृष्णदेवराय द्वारा राजनीतिक रूप से संगठित किया गया था। बाद में, 15वीं और 16वीं शताब्दी में, उन्होंने तमिल देश पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया और नायक सरदारों की स्थापना की। इस समय, बलिजा जातियों बाएं हाथ के वर्ग के नेता थे। इन बलिजा योद्धाओं को निडर के रूप में जाना जाता था और कुछ कहानियों में उनके मामलों में हस्तक्षेप करने वाले राजाओं की हत्या करने की बात कही गई है। सिंथिया टैलबोट का मानना है कि आंध्र में व्यावसायिक वर्णनकर्ताओं का जाति-आधारित वर्णनकर्ताओं था। मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी में शुरुआती राज जनगणना प्रयासों में बलिजा उपजातियों के सदस्य होने का दावा करने वाले लोगों की एक विस्तृत विविधता दर्ज की गई, लेकिन उनमें बहुत कम समानताएं थीं और इस तरह उन्होंने उन्हें देसाई या "देश की सभी जातियों का अधीक्षक" बना दिया। उन्हें दाहिने हाथ वाली जातियों के रूप में वर्गीकृत किया गया था। डेविड रुडनर का दावा है कि 19वीं सदी में बलिजा चेट्टिस, बलिजा नायक योद्धाओं से एक अलग जाति बन गई; और तदनुसार उनका चेट्टी व्यापारियों की तुलना में नायक योद्धाओं के साथ घनिष्ठ संबंध है। गवारा एक वैश्य व्यापारिक समुदाय है और बलिजा की एक उपजाति है। कवराई बालिजास वैश्यों का तमिल नाम शासनकाल के दौरान रामानुजाचार्य द्वारा वैष्णववाद वैश्य वानिया में परिवर्तित कर दिया गया था। ये अधिकतर बेंगलुरु के पास चन्नापटना में पाए जाते हैं। वे अपनी आदतों में साफ़ हैं, शुद्ध शाकाहारी हैं, रामानुजाचार्य के सिद्धांतों का पालन करते हैं, वैष्णव देवताओं की पूजा करते हैं, कन्नड़ बोलते हैं और अपने मृतकों का दाह संस्कार करते हैं।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span तीसरी शताब्दी ईस्वी के दौरान कृष्णा और गोदावरी डेल्टा पर शासन किया था। काकतीय राजवंश के दौरान, नायक की उपाधि उन योद्धाओं को दी जाती थी, जिन्हें अदालत में प्रदान की गई सेवाओं के लिए नयंकारापुवरम प्रणाली के एक भाग के रूप में भूमि और उपाधि प्राप्त होती थी। नायक को काकतीय दरबार में एक अधिकारी के रूप में जाना जाता था; नयनकार धारण करने, प्रशासनिक उपाधि अंगारक्ष रखने और नायक पदवी धारण करने के बीच एक संबंध है। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि बलिजाओं के बीच नायक उपाधि का अधिक व्यापक उपयोग विजयनगर साम्राज्य के दौरान हुआ था, जहां बलिजा वैश्य व्यापारी-योद्धा राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक शक्ति तक पहुंचे और नायक पदों पर दावा किया। राजवंशों विजयनगर साम्राज्य बलिजा कर-खेती द्वारा विस्तारित, नकदी-उन्मुख अर्थव्यवस्था पर आधारित था। विजयनगर के राजाओं द्वारा कुछ बलिजा वैश्य वानिया परिवारों को नायक (गवर्नर, कमांडर) During the late 18th century, merchants of the caste became prominent in trade. In spite of their inferior ritual rank, they were the most well known trading caste in Bengal region as per the 1951 Census of India.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 700;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Origin and history</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Origin and early medieval period</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The presence and activity of mercantile groups in Bengal becomes visible in historical records from the mid-fifth century onwards, due to the so-called land sale grants issued under the Gupta provincial administration of Pundravardhana-bhukti of North Bengal. After two-and-a-half centuries of absence, merchant groups reappear in the inscriptions of Bengal and the adjoining areas from the early ninth century onwards, but they cease to appear in the inscriptions of Bengal and Bihar from the mid-twelfth century.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The thirteenth century Hindu text Bṛhaddharma Puraṇa placed Suvarnabaniks in middle-ranking Shudras but Vallalcharita degraded them from that position. The social order described in the Brihaddharma Purana consists of bipolarity of brahmins and shudras without intermediate varnas of Kshatriya and Vaishya. It indicates that Brahmins probably attained some level of hegemony in that period with which they could attempt to impose their idealized social order. However this imposition entailed tension and negotiation between brahmins and other social groups including merchants, as the text suggests. Historian Furui concludes that the imposition of inferior ritual ranks on merchant groups were attempts by brahmins to restrain them.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The characteristics of Vallal Charita, which was written in the sixteenth century depicting the Bengali society of the twelfth century, were that legends or prevailing traditions of that times were well mixed with historical facts. The listing of Suvarnabanik caste first in the sat(clean) category, and then in the asat(unclean) category, with the explanation that they became degraded, is significant. According to historian Nihar Ranjan Ray, there is possibly some truth to the belief that these trading castes were degraded by King Vallalasena. Suvarnabaniks displeased him by refusing to lend him money when it was wanted, and that he raised the four other castes to the status of sat Sudras because they happened to have pleased him, may have been true. Finally, Vallalsena's particular animosity against the Suvarnabaniks, who were allies and related to the Palas, furnished an admirable historical background. Before the seventh or the eighth centuries A.D. when historical evidences indicate that the society was based largely on trade and commerce, the merchant classes had a notably high position in the society. But since trade and commerce declined, and the society became more and more dependent on cottage industries and agriculture, the caste ranks of the merchant classes became more and more lowered, and reached a decidedly low stage at the beginning of the Sena and Varman periods, whereas the ritual ranking of most of the craft castes became relatively high at that time.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Late medieval and colonial period</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The rich Suvarna Banik community, which didn't have much social status, zealously joined Hare Krishna Bhakti movement of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to enhance their social status. Despite holding low ceremonial rank for centuries, gold merchants of Subarnabanik caste were affluent people. In the days of the East India Company and the early days of the British rule, they were important persons in the new political system. The British merchants borrowed money and maintained other economic transactions with Subarnabaniks. The Subarnabaniks gained important positions in the secular urban society which was then developing under the influence of British rulers. Subarnabaniks were among the oldest settlers of Calcutta and in the early days certain parts of the city became identified as their settlements. With a long tradition of city living, the Subarnabanik caste kept gaining in the secular values of the society. The discrepancy between low ceremonial rank and high-secular rank was always a problem. Many Banik castes including Subarnabanik provided the most glaring examples of this anomaly. In 1854 Vidyasagar had scoffed at the representation of the wealthy goldsmith caste of Bengal for admission in the Sanskrit college; His argument to deny their prayer was that - “in the scale of castes, the class (goldsmith or Subarnabanik) stands very low”.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Modern period</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Historian N K Sinha (1967) blamed Vallal Sena, who ruled Bengal in the twelfth century, for the dominance of non-Bengali merchants in Bengal. In Sena's canonical establishment of caste precedence in Bengal, he downgraded the Vaishya Subarnabanik bankers (gold traders) to Sudra, as they refused to advance him the amount of money he wanted. Further after marginalizing the Vaishya merchant community, the King created a powerful upper caste 'service community', that continued to dominate West Bengal's socio economic space. उनकी प्रार्थना को अस्वीकार करने का उनका तर्क था कि - "जातियों के पैमाने पर, वर्ग ( सुबर्णबनिक) बहुत नीचे है"।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">आधुनिक काल इतिहासकार एन के सिन्हा (1967) ने बंगाल में गैर-बंगाली व्यापारियों के प्रभुत्व के लिए वल्लल सेना को दोषी ठहराया, जिन्होंने बारहवीं शताब्दी में बंगाल पर शासन किया था। बंगाल में जाति की पूर्वता की सेना की विहित स्थापना में, उन्होंने वैश्य सुबर्णबनिक बैंकरों (सोने के व्यापारियों) को शूद्र में पदावनत कर दिया, क्योंकि उन्होंने उन्हें उतनी धनराशि देने से इनकार कर दिया जितना वह चाहते थे। इसके अलावा, वैश्य व्यापारी समुदाय को हाशिये पर धकेलने के बाद, राजा ने एक शक्तिशाली उच्च जाति 'सेवा समुदाय' बनाया, जो पश्चिम बंगाल के सामाजिक आर्थिक क्षेत्र पर हावी रहा। 1980 तक, बंगाली सुवर्णबनिक पश्चिम बंगाल में एक समृद्ध व्यापारी समुदाय था। </span></div></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; Therefore, Balija means "born from sacrifice".</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Balijas who followed Veerashaivism or Lingayatism called themselves Linga Balijas.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Origin</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The following legendary account of the origin of the "Linga Bhojunnalawaru " is given in the Baramahal Records. Para Brahma or the great god Brahma created the god Pralayakala Rudra or the terrific at the day of destruction, a character of the god Shiva, and he created the Chatur Acharyulu or four sages named Panditaraju, Yekcoramalu, Murralaradulu, and Somaluradulu, and taught them mantras or prayers, and made them his deputies. On a time, the Asuras and Devatas, or the giants and the gods, made war on each other, and the god Pralayakala Rudra produced from his nose a being whom he named Muchari Rudra, and he had five sons, with whom he went to the assistance of the devatas or gods, and enabled them to defeat the giants, and for his service the gods conferred upon him and his sons the following honorary distinctions: —A flag with the figure of an alligator (crocodile) portrayed on it.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">A flag with the figure of a fish portrayed on it.</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">A flag with the figure of a bullock.</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">A flag with the figure of an eagle.</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">A flag with the figure of a bell.</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">A modee ganta, or iron for marking cattle.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The use of burning lamps and flambeaus in their public processions during the day. The use of tents. " On a time, when the god Pralayakala Rudra and Mochari Rudra and his five sons, with other celestial attendants, were assembled on the Kailāsa parvata or mountain of Paradise, the god directed the latter to descend into the Bhuloka or earthly world, and increase and multiply these species. They humbly prayed to know how they were again to reach the divine presence. He answered 'I shall manifest myself in the Bhuloka under the form of the Lingam or Priapus; do you worship me under that form, and you will again be permitted to approach me.' They accordingly descended into the earthly regions, and from them the present castes of Balijawaras deduce their origin.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">History</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Beginning in the 9th century, references are found in inscriptions throughout the Kannada and Tamil areas to a trading network, which is sometimes referred to as a guild, called the Five Hundred Lords of Ayyavolu that provided trade links between trading communities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. From the 13th century, inscriptions referring to "Vira Balanjyas" (warrior merchants) started appearing in the Andhra country. The Vira Balanjyas, whose origins are often claimed to lie in the Ayyavolu, represented long-distance trading networks that employed fighters to protect their warehouses and goods in transit. The traders were identified as nanadesi (of 'many countries') and as swadesi ('own country').The terms balanjya-setti and balija were also used for these traders, and in later times naidu and chetti. These traders formed collectives called pekkandru and differentiated themselves from other collectives called nagaram, which probably represented Komati merchants. The pekkandru collectives also included members of other communities with status titles reddi, boya and nayaka. They spread all over South India, Sri Lanka, and also some countries in the Southeast Asia.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Velcheru Narayana Rao et al. note that the Balijas were first mobilised politically by the Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya. Later, in the 15th and 16th centuries, they colonised the Tamil country and established Nayaka chieftaincies. At this time, Balijas were leaders of the left-hand section of castes. These Balija warriors were noted as fearless and some stories speak of them assassinating kings who interfered with their affairs. Cynthia Talbot believes that in Andhra the transformation of occupational descriptors into caste-based descriptors did not occur until at least the 17th century.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The classification of people as Balija was one of many challenges for the census enumerators of the British Raj era, whose desire was to reduce a complex social system to one of administrative simplicity using theories of evolutionary anthropology. Early Raj census attempts in Madras Presidency recorded a wide variety of people claiming to be members of Balija subcastes but who appeared to share little in common and thus defied the administrative desire for what it considered to be a rational and convenient taxonomy. Those who claimed to be Chetty had an obvious connection through their engagement in trade and those who called themselves Kavarai were simply using the Tamil word for Balija but, for example, the Linga Balija based their claim to Balija status on a sectarian identification, the Gazula were bangle-makers by occupation, the Telaga had Telugu origins and the Rajamahendram also appeared to be a geographic claim based on their origins in the town of Rajahmundry. Subsequent attempts to rationalise the enumeration merely created other anomalies and caused upset.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">DynastyLater Keladi Nayakas</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Rulers</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Ananthapur, Bukkarayapatnam, Dharmavaram Linga Balijas of Hande Family.Hande Hanumappa Nayudu (1569–1582)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Immadi Hampanaidu (1583–1595)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Malakappa Naidu (1595–1619)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Hampa Naidu (1619–1631) Hande Malakappa Naidu's (1595–1619) 4th Son</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Siddappa Naidu (1631–1659)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Pavadappa Naidu (1659–1671)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Ramakka Naidu (1671–1690)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Siddappa Naidu (1690–1696)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Prasannappa Naidu (1696–1719)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Pavadappa Naidu (1719–1737)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Siddappa Naidu (1737–1740)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Ramappa Naidu (1740–1745)</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Tadipatri and Poddatur. क्या आप उस रूप के तहत मेरी पूजा करते हैं, और आप करेंगे 'फिर से मुझसे संपर्क करने की अनुमति दी जाए।' वे तदनुसार सांसारिक क्षेत्रों में उतरे, और उनसे बलिजवारा की वर्तमान जातियाँ अपनी उत्पत्ति का अनुमान लगाती हैं।[7][8] इतिहास 9वीं शताब्दी की शुरुआत में, पूरे कन्नड़ और तमिल क्षेत्रों के शिलालेखों में एक व्यापारिक नेटवर्क का उल्लेख मिलता है, जिसे कभी-कभी एक गिल्ड के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, जिसे फाइव हंड्रेड लॉर्ड्स ऑफ अय्यावोलु कहा जाता है, जो तमिलनाडु और कर्नाटक में व्यापारिक समुदायों के बीच व्यापार संबंध प्रदान करता था। 13वीं शताब्दी से, आंध्र देश में "वीरा बालंज्य" (योद्धा व्यापारी) से संबंधित शिलालेख दिखाई देने लगे। वीरा बालंज्य, जिनकी उत्पत्ति अक्सर अय्यावोलु में होने का दावा किया जाता है, लंबी दूरी के व्यापारिक नेटवर्क का प्रतिनिधित्व करते थे जो पारगमन में अपने गोदामों और सामानों की सुरक्षा के लिए सेनानियों को नियुक्त करते थे। व्यापारियों की पहचान नानादेसी ('कई देशों' के) और स्वदेशी ('अपने देश') के रूप में की गई थी। इन व्यापारियों और बाद के समय में नायडू और चेट्टी के लिए बालंज्या-सेटी और बालिजा शब्दों का भी इस्तेमाल किया गया। इन व्यापारियों ने पेक्कंद्रू नामक समूह बनाए और खुद को नगरम नामक अन्य समूहों से अलग किया, जो संभवतः कोमाटी व्यापारियों का प्रतिनिधित्व करते थे। पेक्कंद्रू समूहों में रेड्डी, बोया और नायका जैसे दर्जा प्राप्त अन्य समुदायों के सदस्य भी शामिल थे। वे पूरे दक्षिण भारत, श्रीलंका और दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया के कुछ देशों में भी फैले हुए हैं।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">वेलचेरु नारायण राव और अन्य। ध्यान दें कि बलिजाओं को सबसे पहले विजयनगर सम्राट कृष्णदेवराय द्वारा राजनीतिक रूप से संगठित किया गया था। बाद में, 15वीं और 16वीं शताब्दी में, उन्होंने तमिल देश पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया और नायक सरदारों की स्थापना की। इस समय, बलिजा जातियों के बाएं हाथ के वर्ग के नेता थे। इन बलिजा योद्धाओं को निडर के रूप में जाना जाता था और कुछ कहानियों में उनके मामलों में हस्तक्षेप करने वाले राजाओं की हत्या करने की बात कही गई है। सिंथिया टैलबोट का मानना है कि आंध्र में व्यावसायिक वर्णनकर्ताओं का जाति-आधारित वर्णनकर्ताओं में परिवर्तन कम से कम 17वीं शताब्दी तक नहीं हुआ था। बलिजा के रूप में लोगों का वर्गीकरण ब्रिटिश राज युग के जनगणना गणनाकर्ताओं के लिए कई चुनौतियों में से एक था, जिनकी इच्छा विकासवादी मानवविज्ञान के सिद्धांतों का उपयोग करके एक जटिल सामाजिक प्रणाली को प्रशासनिक सादगी में कम करना था। मद्रास में प्रारंभिक राज जनगणना के प्रयास प्रेसीडेंसी में बलिजा उपजातियों के सदस्य होने का दावा करने वाले लोगों की एक विस्तृत विविधता दर्ज की गई, लेकिन उनमें बहुत कम समानताएं थीं और इस तरह उन्होंने तर्कसंगत और सुविधाजनक वर्गीकरण के लिए प्रशासनिक इच्छा को खारिज कर दिया। जो लोग चेट्टी होने का दावा करते थे, उनका व्यापार में संलग्नता के माध्यम से एक स्पष्ट संबंध था और जो लोग खुद को कवराई कहते थे, वे केवल बालिजा के लिए तमिल शब्द का उपयोग कर रहे थे, लेकिन, उदाहरण के लिए, लिंगा बालिजा ने बालिजा स्थिति के लिए अपने दावे को एक सांप्रदायिक पहचान, गज़ुला पर आधारित किया। पेशे से चूड़ी बनाने वाले थे, तेलगा तेलुगु मूल के थे और राजमहेंद्रम भी राजमुंदरी शहर में उनकी उत्पत्ति के आधार पर एक भौगोलिक दावा प्रतीत होता है। गणना को तर्कसंगत बनाने के बाद के प्रयासों ने केवल अन्य विसंगतियाँ पैदा कीं और परेशानियाँ पैदा कीं।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">स्थिति वर्ष 2019 में, तेलंगाना राज्य वीरशैव लिंगायत महासंघ के प्रतिनिधियों ने लिंगा बलिजा और वीरशैव लिंगायत को केंद्र सरकार की अन्य पिछड़ा वर्गों की सूची में शामिल करने के लिए राष्ट्रीय पिछड़ा वर्ग आयोग में याचिका दायर की। 2022 में, संसद सदस्य बी.बी. पाटिल ने दो उपजातियों को ओबीसी सूची में शामिल करने पर चर्चा करने के लिए सामाजिक न्याय और अधिकारिता मंत्री वीरेंद्र कुमार खटीक से मुलाकात की।</span></div></span>प्रवीण गुप्ता - PRAVEEN GUPTAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02103326902710548202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-959271338015810222.post-85558137981501943312024-03-15T02:53:00.000-07:002024-03-15T02:53:53.020-07:00HARDOYE KHARE VAISHYA<div style="text-align: justify;"><b style="font-family: arial; text-align: justify;"><b>Many years ago I had read that there are about 100 sub castes of Vaniks. One article mentions that there was a record of 84 sub-divisions of Vaniks in the time of Vastupal (early 13th century). In my effort to identify these sub-divisions, I have managed to name 19 main divisions and, with the inclusion of their sub-divisions, I have reached a total of 50.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 700;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The main sub divisions of Vaniks (Vania) are:</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Nima, Zarola, Porwad, Shrimali, Oshwal, Khadayta, Kapol, Laad, Sorathia, Naagar, Modh, Maheshwari, Zarovi, Gurjar, Dishawal, Agarwal, Soni, Kandoi and Ghanchi.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Many of these are based on names of places (region, town or village). These divisions can be traced back to migration of the Indus Valley peoples into different parts of India. For example, those that settled in the Shrimal area of Marwad (Rajasthan) were called Shrimali, in Osia were Oshwal, in Sorath were Sorathia, in Skandpur were Skandayta (Khadayta), in the area around Bharooch which was ‘Lat’ province were Laad, in Modhera were Modh etc. There were further sub divisions; that were based on small areas of a province. Ghoghari (near Ghogha/Bhavnagar), Halari (near Jamnagar, Zalawadi (near Surendranagar), Machchhu Kantha (towns on Machchhu river i.e. Morbi, Wankaner) , Golwad, Kuchchhi and similar.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">But not all the major divisions are location based. Some, such as Soni, Kandoi and Ghanchi, were names given to people in those specific trades. Most of the above were further divided into Dasha and Visha, thus nearly doubling the count. There is no definite reasoning found for the division of Vaniks as Dasha and Visha.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">A few explanations, none very convincing, are given below:</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">1. A situation arose where there was a confrontation between two groups of Vaniks. There were 10 (Dash) on one side and 20 (Vish)</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">on the other side. They and their descendants have since been known as Dasha and Visha respectively.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">2. In a family of two brothers, the children of the younger brother were called Dasha (Desh means smaller) and those of elder brother were called Visaha</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">3. During a migration, a group of Vaniks that remained in the original area (Desh) were called Dasha and those who moved to another area (Videsh) were known as Visha.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">4. Again based on the issue of migration, those originally of an area/country (Desh) were known as Dasha and the ones who came in from another area/country (Videsh) were named Visha.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The following list which numbers around 50, takes all the variations and divisions described above.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Dash Nima, Visha Nima, Virpur Dasha Nima, Balasinor Dasha Nima, Dasha Zarola, Visha Zarola, Dasha Porwad, Visha Porwad, Marwad, Visha Porwad, Sattavish Dasha Porwad, Dasha Porwad Meshri, Ghoghri Dasha Shrimali, Ghoghri Visha Shrimali, Machhu Kantha Visha Shrimali, Sorath Dasha Shrimali, Sorath Visha Shrimali, Zalavadi Dasha Shrimali, Zalavadi Visha Shrimali, Halari Visha Shrimali, 108 nagol Visha Shrimali, Patan Visha Shrimali, Dasha Oshwal, Ghoghari Visha Oshwal, Halari Visha Oshwal, Kachchhi Visha Oshwal, Kachchhi</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Dasha Oshwal, Godwad Oshwal, Surat Visha Oshwal, Dasha Khadayta, Visha Khadayta, Modasa Ekda Dasha Khadayta, Kapol (have not noticed Dasha/Visha divisions but have divisions based on Gotra), Dasha Lad, Visha Lad, Surti Visha Lad, Damania Visha Lad, Dash Sorathia, Visha Sorathia, Dasha Nagar, Visah Nagar, Dasha Zarovi, Visha Zarovi, Dash Modh, Visah Modh, Dasha Modh Mandalia, Ghoghari Modh, Dasha Maheshvari, Visha Maheshvari, Dandu Maheshvari, Dasha Gurjar, Visha Gurjar, Vagad Be Chovishi Gurjar, Dasha Dishawal, Visha Dishawal, Surti Dasha Dishawal, Shrimali Soni (are there any Dasha/Visha or other divisions?), Kandoi, Ghanchi etc.</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Religions followed by Vaniks</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">The main religions followed within the Vanik community are Jain and Vaishnav (Hindu). In ancient time, people used to change religion to follow what their king would support. Changing from Hindu to Jain and vice-versa was accepted and was done without any pomp or ceremony</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">कई वर्ष पहले मैंने पढ़ा था कि गुजराती वणिकों की लगभग 100 उपजातियाँ होती हैं। एक लेख में उल्लेख है कि वास्तुपाल के समय (13वीं शताब्दी के आरंभ में) वाणिकों के 84 उपविभागों का रिकॉर्ड था। इन उप-विभागों की पहचान करने के अपने प्रयास में, मैं 19 मुख्य प्रभागों का नाम बताने में कामयाब रहा हूं और, उनके उप-विभागों को शामिल करने के साथ, मैं कुल 50 तक पहुंच गया हूं। वणिक (वनिया) के मुख्य उपविभाग हैं: नीमा, ज़ारोला, पोरवाड, श्रीमाली, ओशवाल, खड़ायता, कपोल, लाड, सोराठिया, नागर, मोध, माहेश्वरी, ज़ारोवी, गुर्जर, दिशावल, अग्रवाल, सोनी, कंदोई और घांची।</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">इनमें से कई स्थानों (क्षेत्र, कस्बे या गाँव) के नामों पर आधारित हैं। इन विभाजनों का पता सिंधु घाटी के लोगों के भारत के विभिन्न हिस्सों में प्रवास से लगाया जा सकता है। उदाहरण के लिए, मारवाड़ (राजस्थान) के श्रीमाल क्षेत्र में बसने वालों को श्रीमाली कहा जाता था, ओसिया में ओशवाल, सोरठ में सोराठिया, स्कंदपुर में स्कंदयता (खदायता), भरूच के आसपास का क्षेत्र जो 'लाट' प्रांत था, लाड कहलाते थे। , मोढेरा में मोढ़ आदि थे। और भी उपविभाग थे; जो एक प्रांत के छोटे क्षेत्रों पर आधारित थे। घोघारी (घोघा/भावनगर के पास), हलारी (जामनगर के पास, ज़लावाड़ी (सुरेंद्रनगर के पास), मच्छू कांथा (मच्छू नदी पर स्थित शहर यानी मोरबी, वांकानेर), गोलवाड, कुच्छी और इसी तरह के। लेकिन सभी प्रमुख प्रभाग स्थान आधारित नहीं हैं। कुछ, जैसे सोनी, कंदोई और घांची, उन विशिष्ट व्यवसायों के लोगों को दिए गए नाम थे। उपरोक्त में से अधिकांश को दशा और विश में विभाजित किया गया, इस प्रकार गिनती लगभग दोगुनी हो गई। वणिकों को दशा और विष के रूप में विभक्त करने का कोई निश्चित तर्क नहीं मिलता। कुछ स्पष्टीकरण, जिनमें से कोई भी बहुत ठोस नहीं है, नीचे दिए गए हैं:</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">1. ऐसी स्थिति उत्पन्न हो गई कि वणिकों के दो गुटों में टकराव हो गया। एक तरफ 10 (दशा) थे और 20 (विशा ) दूसरी ओर। तब से उन्हें और उनके वंशजों को क्रमशः दशा और विषा के नाम से जाना जाता है।</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">2. दो भाइयों के परिवार में छोटे भाई के बच्चों को दशा (देश का अर्थ है छोटा) और बड़े भाई के बच्चों को विशाहा कहा जाता था।</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">3. प्रवास के दौरान वाणिकों का जो समूह मूल क्षेत्र (देश) में रह गया, उसे दशा कहा गया और जो दूसरे क्षेत्र (विदेश) में चले गए, उन्हें विश कहा गया।</div></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><div style="text-align: justify;">4. फिर प्रवासन के मुद्दे के आधार पर, जो मूल रूप से एक क्षेत्र/देश (देश) के थे, उन्हें दशा के नाम से जाना जाता था और जो दूसरे क्षेत्र/देश (विदेश) से आए थे, उन्हें विशा नाम दिया गया था। निम्नलिखित सूची, जिसकी संख्या लगभग 50 है, ऊपर वर्णित सभी विविधताओं और प्रभागों को लेती है। दश नीमा, विशा निमा, वीरपुर दशा निमा, बालासिनोर दशा निमा, दशा ज़ारोला, विशा ज़ारोला, दशा पोरवाड, विशा पोरवाड, मारवाड़, विशा पोरवाड, सातविश दशा पोरवाड, दशा पोरवाड मेशरी, घोघरी दशा श्रीमाली, घोघरी विशा श्रीमाली, मछू कंथा विशा श्रीमाली, सोरठ दशा श्रीमाली, सोरठ विशा श्रीमाली, ज़लावादी दशा श्रीमाली, ज़लावादी विशा श्रीमाली, हलारी विशा श्रीमाली, 108 नागोल विशा श्रीमाली, पाटन विशा श्रीमाली, दशा ओशवाल, घोघारी विशा ओशवाल, हलारी विशा ओशवाल, कच्ची विशा ओशवाल, कच्छी.</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">दशा ओशवाल, गोडवाड ओशवाल, सूरत विशा ओशवाल, दशा खड़ायता, विशा खड़ायता, मोडासा एकदा दशा खड़ायता, कपोल (दशा/विशा विभाजनों पर ध्यान नहीं दिया है लेकिन गोत्र के आधार पर विभाजन हैं), दशा लाड, विशा लाड, सुरति विशा लाड, दमनिया विशा लाड, दश सोरठिया, विशा सोरठिया, दशा नागर, विशा नागर, दशा जरोवी, विशा जरोवी, दश मोढ़, विसा मोढ़, दशा मोध मांदलिया, घोघरी मोढ़, दशा महेश्वरी, विशा महेश्वरी, दांडू महेश्वरी, दशा गुर्जर, विशा गुर्जर, वागड़ बे चोविशी गुर्जर, दशा दिशावाल, विशा दिशावाल, सुरति दशा दिशावाल, श्रीमाली सोनी (क्या कोई दशा/विशा या अन्य विभाग हैं?), कंदोई, घांची आदि। </span></div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial;
