लाड बनियों के नाम से प्रतीत होता है कि वे दक्षिण गुजरात से अहमदनगर आये थे जिनका पुराना नाम (150 ई.) लाड या लाट देश था। पुरुषों और महिलाओं के बीच आम तौर पर उपयोग किए जाने वाले नाम स्थानीय हिंदुओं द्वारा उपयोग किए जाने वाले नामों से भिन्न नहीं हैं। उनके उपनाम बालाटे, चव्हाण, सिखले, चौधरी, गोसावी, झारे, कराडे, खेले, मोदी, पैठंकर और शेटे हैं।

उनके परिवार-देवता तुलजापुर की देवी, सतारा में शिंगनापुर की महादेई और शोलापुर में पंढरपुर के विठोबा हैं। इनका जाति देवता पेटलाड के निकट आशापुरी या अशनाई है।

पारिवारिक संपत्ति में समानता लेकिन उपनाम में समानता न होना विवाह में बाधक है। वे धार्मिक लोग हैं, अपने परिवार और अन्य ब्राह्मण देवताओं की पूजा करते हैं और पवित्र स्थानों पर जाते हैं। उनका पुजारी एक देशस्थ/खेडावल ब्राह्मण है, जिसे वे अपने प्रमुख समारोहों में संचालन करने के लिए कहते हैं। उनके रीति-रिवाज आंशिक रूप से कुनबियों के समान हैं और आंशिक रूप से ब्राह्मणों के समान हैं, सिवाय इसके कि ग्रंथ सामान्य हैं और वैदिक संस्कृत में नहीं हैं। सामाजिक विवादों का निपटारा बैठकों में किया जाता है और सामाजिक अनुशासन का उल्लंघन करने वालों को जुर्माने से दंडित किया जाता है, जो आम तौर पर जाति-भोज पर खर्च किया जाता है। अन्य बनियों की तरह वे बीसा और दासा समूहों या 20 और 10 में विभाजित हैं, दासा अनियमित वंश के हैं।

Lad Banis as their name seems to show that they came to Ahmadnagar from south Gujarat whose old name (A.D. 150) was Lad or Lat Desh. The names in common use among men and women do not differ from those used by local Hindus. Their surnames are Balate, Chavan, Cikhale, Chaudhari, Gosavi, Jhare, Karade, Khele, Modi, Paithankar and Shete.

Their family-gods are Devi of Tuljapur, Mahadey of Shingnapur in Satara, and Vithoba of Pandharpur in Sholapur. Their caste deity is Ashapuri or Ashnai near Petlad.

Sameness of family-stock but not sameness of surname is a bar to marriage. They are religious people, worshipping their family and other Brahmanic gods, and visiting holy places. Their priest is a Deshasth/Khedawal Brahman whom, they ask to officiate at their leading ceremonies. Their customs are partly like those of Kunbis and partly like those of Brahmans, except that the texts are in ordinary and not in Vedic Sanskrit. Social disputes are settled at meetings and breaches of social discipline are punished with fines which are generally spent on caste-feasts. Like other Banias they are divided into the Bisa and Dasa groups or 20s and 10s, the Dasa being of irregular descent.
